If God is in control of everything, why do people have to live through murder, suffering, war, etc?

I am asking this question on a philosophical level. If God were in control, why are things so terribly for some people, and so good for others? How come only some people get miracles, and others don't? Doesn't this lead us to believe that there are things/powers/motives out There beyond our comprehension? Don't you agree? That life is so much more complicated than we will ever even be able to mildly comprehend...
